V'INTERFACE - DESIGN COMPETITION

Cultural Creative Design Contest using Laser Processing Technology for Rural Revitalization

https://www.ruralrevcomp.net/

V’ Interface design competition is inspired by the need to connect rural and urban context in terms of history, culture, people, and environment. China has recently put forward “rural revitalization” as one of its key development strategies, and local governments are vigorously implementing various strategies towards this context. There is, however, a gap in the use of creative means for such development. At the same time, the fast growth of technologies is causing a lot of craftsmanships to lose their inheritance. We want to gather designers from around the world to come together and think about how design can help rural revitalization in the current digital era.

V’ Interface uses a real rural village – Bamou is a county lying in the Baise City, Guangxi province, China. The village has beautiful mountains, clear water and a pleasant climate. The annual average temperature is around 18°, and the ecological environment remains intact. It is also blessed with a business-minded and innovative population, plus abundant resources of water, minerals, bamboo, and timber.

The competition is open to students and professionals, working individually or in teams. Winning entries will receive monetary awards and be featured in an exhibition and publication. The most compelling and innovative projects may be constructed in a future second phase of the competition.

Join us in bridging a new future for the new generation!

The theme of V’ Interface design competition is rural revitalization, combining technology and art as the core, laser processing technology as the primary tool, and cultural and creative product design as the goal. The aim is to pay attention to the development of rural villages, cultivate the momentum of rural industry, strengthen the talent support for villagers, and promote the prosperity of rural culture.

The final design product can be of any kind. The only constraint is it needs to make use of laser processing technology at any stage of the design or fabrication. Every participant can submit up to two final products. They can be a single product or a series in the form of a set. Participants are required to describe the feasibility of producing the final product.

Traditional architectural culture and craft spirit are losing their capability as an inheritance to pass down to new generations. The lack of design communication channels, architectural aesthetics, and design concepts have not yet been popularized. The existing cultural and creative design products often lose their core elements: innovation, attraction, and, most importantly, meaning. How to create iconic artistic and innovative products that could help pass on cultural history? How to effectively promote rural culture through product design? How digital technology can provide the possibility to solve this problem instead, and also brings many development opportunities for rural revitalization.

A laser is a device that emits light through a process of optical amplification based on the stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation. A laser differs from other sources of light in that it emits coherent light. Spatial coherence allows a laser to be focused to a tight spot, enabling applications such as laser cutting and lithography.

V’ Interface would like to look into laser processing technology as our first competition focus. Many artistic products are made with digital construction technology. We want to limit the competition challenge to a specific technique, which could help understand how it speeds up decision-making in the design stage and supports the transition of traditional 3D models to the entity model. We are also looking for economical solutions that can achieve a kaleidoscope of modelling and inspire young and experienced designers alike.

All participants in the V’ Interface design competition will have to deliver an outcome based on the following format:

  • A short paragraph describing the design in PDF

  • A maximum of 4 boards/sheets. – [ A1 size in 300 dpi ] in portrait digital format (JPEG).

  • Each image should be less than 10MB.

Minimum requisites in the content containing:

  • Product parts drawings, component assembly drawing, and general assembly drawing (Compulsory)

  • Key conceptual diagram x 1 (Minimum)

  • 3D product rendered image x 4

  • Illustrations, sketches (if any) can be added to support the entry in the form of additional documents

  • Ensure that the final sheets which are submitted do not include your name or any other mark of identification.

  • Mention sheet number on the lower right corner of every sheet.

  • This is not just a design idea competition. There are also actual requirements associated with the issue.

  • Plagiarism of any idea/form/design/image will be disqualified with a notice.
